Chapter 4: Buying with Purpose — Questions to Ask Before You Buy

There’s something captivating about new clothes, the texture of fresh fabric, the promise of something different, the way it feels in your hands. But in a world constantly overflowing with options, I invite you to slow down, to pause, to ask: Does this truly belong in my life?

Building a wardrobe that feels like you is about more than simply filling the closet. It’s about choosing pieces that become part of your story, garments you reach for on busy mornings, pieces that evolve with the seasons and your moods.

Before adding something new to your collection, here are a few thoughtful questions I always come back to:

  1. Does it fit your life, not just your wishlist?
Will you genuinely wear it to work, weekends, meetings, or quiet days, or is it simply appealing in theory?
  2. Can you imagine reaching for it 30 times or more?
If you don’t have a clear yes here, it might not be quite right. It’s wonderful when clothes settle into your wardrobe and your life, rather than being worn once and forgotten.
  3. Do you truly love it?
Not just ‘like’ or ‘nice enough’, but the kind of affection that brings a smile when you pull it from your wardrobe.
  4. Is it made with intention?
What your clothes are made from and who made them is part of their story, and that story matters just as much as how they feel and fit.

Taking this moment of pause may seem small, but it’s a meaningful act in a world of constant temptation. It turns buying clothes into building a wardrobe, one that is thoughtful, versatile, and deeply you.

I also find it helpful to envision how a piece will live in my wardrobe before buying. Can it layer under your favourite jacket? Does it complement your existing wardrobe? Will it dress up or down, carry you from morning to evening? These questions keep your wardrobe feeling curated, fresh, and full of possibility.

Of course, buying clothes should still be a joyful experience. There’s room for excitement and discovery, for something unexpected and beautiful. But when you buy with care, those moments become lasting favourites instead of fleeting distractions.
